Notes
Establishing nodes
* A key benefit of setting up nodes in people’s homes (rather than organisations) is that it enables building volunteer base; engaged node maintainers. A pathway for hobbyist engagement.
Should we aim to find a solution to the challenges of getting a static IP, to ease participation? Not a priority. The CGNAT issue shouldn’t be a barrier. Tailscale or similar may be a way forward
The roadmap: 1. Wikipedia is low hanging fruit 2. Static websites would be next 3. Community centre / organisational nodes and home-housed nodes are part of the vision 4. After that need to start investigating the connectivity
Volunteers to recruit
NHaving maintainers of our Kiwix recipes Then building relationship with community facilities A big win for Jade would be to have someone else maintain the Kiwix recipe The LoRes website has a tec is a technical roadmap but we don’t have a roadmap for personnel and governance. For the technical project we want about 10 volunteers who can steward notes, requires a moderate level of technical engagement. We can anticipate some momentum and interest from potential volunteers at the Solarpunk meetup How do we funnel that? Light touch: website info about what we need, request they email us Volunteer room on Element Maintain a list of prospective volunteers: what are they interested in doing?
Wade: A lot of the documentation could be a script. A prepackaged image that can be put on a RPi with some config. Or perhaps we can keep with what we’ve got for now for debugging purposes. Blackboxing not ideal because node stewards are more important than nodes. Offloading can involve: - Baselining and being the person that the buck stops with - Tasks Volunteer involvement and management: Can we find someone who wants to baseline us having 10 volunteers Node stewards: 1-4 hours a week Some open source coding contributors who will help solve problems Let’s aim for 3-5 volunteers who can be node stewards … try out our instructions Call to action can be stronger at the talk next week Maggie can take signups, the following month we will be hacking stuff. Build your own RPi node and learn how to maintain it.
Solarpunk meetup next week: Rob and Simon: get info ready for the next meetup All: consider bringing food, or help Jade with collecting food from Green Refectory Sarah, Jade, Simon: website update to provide up to date info about membership volunteers and getting involved.
Solarpunk Meetups
- Third Weds of every month
- Jade’s Neighbourhood First Software talk (for the Everything Open event in Canberra) would make a good option for the kick off meeting, followed by something interactive
- The Adaptation Game: there are funds available, at a later stage
- 18 Feb will be the first one. At Balam Balam.
- Advertise on Meetup.com - Rob
- Promote through our networks – Sarah
Membership fees
- Draft a Matrix message: Maggie
- Include a PayID: our new email address? Jade
Email address for MBT
- Currently using Fastmail, Melbourne based. on Jade's Family account.
- Jade and Wade will set something up
Setting up LoRes nodes
- The assumption has been new participants with nodes will have Linux but not everyone is running Linux
- Wade suggests a techie and non-techie sit down and work through the documentation. Wade and Maggie to address through that together
- Updating Wikipedia in future – pass around thumbdrives instead of downloading Zims; as a first step, a blank thumbdrive can work, but QWix will be empty.
- LoRes node set up at Balam Balam: Jade envisages that the node should run on a VPS on the server for now.
- Down the track, we can look at a RPi to run from radio instead of via Internet
Website updates
- Expression of interest form on the website doesn’t work - Simon will fix that
- For now, add our email and link to the Meetup group: Solarpunk meetups
