We think of our hosting in the following layers, with a working group and processes associated with each one:

• Physical Layer: Our racks, machines, power systems, physical network infrastructure, and associated tooling for power management, lifecycle and provisioning.
• Virtual Layer: The storage, backup and running of virtual servers running on top of the Physical Layer
• Capability Layer: Our equivalent of “the cloud”. This layer includes containerization and other features used by our volunteers to build app hosting.
• Application Layer: Hosting setup for specific applications. This includes containers, routing rules, database, and all code and documentation needed to work with them.

We model and monitor this conceptual model using our software projects:

• ParOps: Participatory Ops - our system for monitoring and navigating our hosting systems at all four layers.

• Apps - A list of software we host
• Customers - People and groups currently relying on our software

These are folks we are providing services to. Currently cloud based services as our local hosting isn't ready.
